
Makovnjača is a poppy seed roll and is one of the favorite desserts at Christmas and Easter time in Croatia.
Directions
STEP 1 Mix poppy seeds, 3/4 cup sugar, hot milk, 1 tablespoon melted butter, and lemon juice together in a bowl until well combined. Cover and refrigerate while making bread.
STEP 2 Pour warm water in a small bowl, add sugar and yeast and let sit for 10 minutes.
STEP 3 Whisk flour and salt together in a bowl. Cut in butter and mix with hands until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Add yeast mixture from STEP 2 and egg yolk than stir to make a soft dough.
STEP 4 Onto a floured work surface knead the dough until smooth and roll it out.
STEP 5 Spread the filling onto the rolled out dough and roll it up.
STEP 6 Place the roll onto the parchment paper and let it rest for an hour until doubled.
STEP 7 Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F and brush loaves with beaten egg white.
STEP 8 Bake in preheated oven for 30 to 40 minutes. Then cover with a clean kitchen towel until cool.
Serve cold. Traditionally is served with a glass of milk.
